Causes of Refrigerator Leaks
Maybe your water alarm alerted you, maybe you see a puddle or some dripping, or maybe you see some signs of water damage (corrosion, water stains, etc.). Once you’ve discovered a leak, consider the possible causes.
Blocked defroster. A blocked defroster can stop defrost-cycle water from draining properly. Try clearing out the small drain by pouring hot water into it. Remove any debris with a pipe cleaner.
Drain pan. Sometimes the drain pan itself can leak. Check for cracks.
Filter. Refrigerators with filters can leak if the filter is the wrong size or not installed properly.
Water line. This is potentially the most problematic. Refrigerators with ice makers or water dispensers have water lines running between the main water supply and the back of the fridge. Feel to see if the water line is wet or dripping. Cracked hoses and loose connections are often the culprit.
Refrigerator leaks can damage the flooring and cabinets in your kitchen. If you experience a refrigerator leak, please contact SERVPRO® of North Central right away to treat and help to prevent any further damage.

Sewage / Toilet Overflow
Toilet Overflow or Sewer Backup?
Call Today (210) 899-1017
Sewer backups should be considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses. SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio has specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.
Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water. SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.
The three types of contaminated water:
Category 1: "Clean Water"
Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.
- Water from a clean source like a broken water line
- If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3
Category 2: "Gray Water"
Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
- May contain bacteria and viruses
- Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated
Category 3: "Black Water"
Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.
- May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
- Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio has the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. 3 Signs You Need To Replace a Toilet
5/10/2022 (Permalink)
When you have supply line damage in your home, it's best to contact a professional for any plumbing or water damage needs.
3 Signs That Your Toilet Needs To Be Replaced
Most people want to deal with their toilets as little as possible. However, as your toilet ages, it may begin to require more and more attention. Whether you have a leaking toilet or some other issue, here are three signs that this fixture is ready to be replaced.
1. Signs of Age
Like anything, an old toilet eventually begins to show signs of wear and tear. Here are a few things to look for when determining if your toilet needs replacement due to old age:
- Cracks in the porcelain
- Wobbling
- Persistent surface stains
- Built-up mineral deposits
2. Leaking
A leaking toilet can lead to a sky-high water bill and much more costly home damage if not addressed. There are a variety of potential causes of a leak. The water could be seeping from around the base or dripping from the tank itself, or your tank may be leaking and running water constantly into the bowl.
When you are experiencing persistent leaking, consider replacing your toilet to avoid further problems. If you have a long-term leak that has already created water or mold damage you should contact a professional in water damage repair to mitigate any further issues.
3. Frequent Minor Repairs
Your toilet has a lot of moving parts to help it function properly, including various levers, valves, gaskets and the entire flush and float system within the tank. Any of these items can wear out after time and require replacement. The cost of these parts and the loss of your valuable time can start to add up. If you find yourself performing minor toilet repair on a regular basis, you would likely benefit from replacing the entire thing to have a properly functioning system.
You shouldn't let an old or leaking toilet suck up your time and money. Know when it is time to invest in a newer, more efficient system by taking a look at these signs.

Tips for Preventing Water Damage in Your Absence
5/10/2022 (Permalink)
Water Damage Prevention Tips While You're Away
Everyone deserves to get away once in a while, but coming back to your home in San Antonio, TX, after a relaxing trip or holiday to find water damage can ruin the end of a good time. To avoid the need for water pipe repair when you return from your vacation, here are a few tips to follow before you leave.
1. Inspect
You should be checking your home for potential problems that lead to water damage on a regular basis anyway, but it is especially important before you plan to be away for a while. Make sure none of the hoses or supply lines are leaking. Check for broken shingles on the roof and clogged rain gutters. Test the sump pump in your basement by pouring water in and seeing if it kicks into gear.
2. Maintain
If you find any problems during your inspection, you will want to fix them. Water remediation specialists can mitigate any existing water damage and perform water pipe repair so that secondary problems such as mold growth don't develop in your absence. Clean your gutters, and insulate exposed pipes, especially if your trip takes place during the winter months. Set your thermostat so that your home remains warm so that your pipes don't freeze while you're gone.
3. Drain
Ideally, you have a neighbor, friend or family member who can check on your house periodically. If that's not the case, however, you can still protect your home by cutting off water flow altogether. One way to avoid a broken pipe is to drain all the water out of it before you go. You can also turn off the main water valve to the house. If water isn't flowing to your pipes, your home is less likely to be flooded.
No one wants to come back from vacation to discover that water pipe repair and water mitigation is necessary. By taking these precautions, however, you can relax fully during your trip, knowing your home is safe from water damage.

Flush a Water Heater in 4 Easy Steps
5/10/2022 (Permalink)
By routinely flushing the water heater home, you can extend the life by years.
How To Flush A Water Heater in 4 Simple Steps
Water Heater maintenance is fairly simple, but it can go a long way toward preserving the integrity of your device and extending the life of it. One thing that you can do to prevent costly repairs and damage is to flush it regularly. If you have never performed a water heater flush before and want to know how, this post can serve as your guide. Before you begin, you will need the following:
- A standard garden hose
- A screwdriver
- An outside area to which you can divert water
- Protective gear
Once you have the necessary tools, it’s time to get to work.
1. Turn Off the Device
Before you can begin working on your water heater, you need to turn it off. For a gas heater, extinguish the pilot. For an electrical one, pop the breaker that powers the heater.
2. Connect the Hose and Prep the Area
Once your heater is off, prep the drainage area and connect the hose to the drain valve. Be sure to wear protective gear while you work to prevent burning and bacteria contamination.
3. Start Draining
Once the area is prepped and the hose is attached, it’s time to start draining. Open the drain valve and allow the water to stream for several minutes. You can help the water drain faster by opening the kitchen sink’s hot water valve. Wait a few minutes, and then turn it off. Wait until the flow of water from the hose has turned into a trickle, then go inside, turn on the hot water faucet once more and let the remainder of the water flush.
4. Close Off the Valves and Restore Power
Once the tank is completely empty, disconnect the hose and close the valves. Turn on your kitchen faucet and leave it on until the flow of water has returned to normal. Once you’ve confirmed that the tank is full, restore power to the heater.
By routinely flushing the water heater in your San Antonio, TX, home, you can extend the life of your heater by years. Follow the steps above for guidance.
The Rising Waters: Toilet Overflow and What To Do About It
4/25/2022 (Permalink)
If you have a sewage backup call the experts at SERVPRO North Central San Antonio at (210) 899-1017
Sewer damage can be incredibly problematic, and quickly getting the situation under control is often imperative. You should know what can cause a flooded toilet and what you should do after it occurs to quickly clean up and restore your home to its natural state.
Understanding Why Toilet Overflow Occurs
Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon issue in homes. However, when you know what the potential causes are, it puts you in a position to take better preventative measures. The following may cause toilet overflow in your home:
• A drain line becomes clogged.
• The septic field is not percolating.
• Sewer damage occurs somewhere in the system’s lines due to issues such as tree roots or foreign objects causing a clog.
• A low flow toilet is not able to handle the demands of your household.
• The trap between the drain line and the toilet bowl becomes blocked.
Cleaning Up Toilet Overflow
The first step is to get rid of any water that may have accumulated in the affected space. Once this is gone, use low-suds soap and warm water to thoroughly clean all elements of the space. Once this is done, use a disinfectant and go over all of the surfaces you have cleaned to reduce any lingering contaminants and impurities.
Once you complete the cleanup process, make sure that you are taking steps to prevent this problem from recurring. Be mindful of how much toilet paper you are using, never flush feminine hygiene products and make sure that small objects do not accidentally get into your toilet and flushed down.
With this information about toilet overflow, you can be better prepared to deal with this type of situation. Should you experience sewer damage, it is generally a good idea to reach out to a sewage company to ensure that the restoration process is done safely and correctly.

Water Restoration: 5 Ways to Deal with Water Damage
5/13/2021 (Permalink)
Standing water can create issues from water flow obstruction to bacterial growth.
As a homeowner, water damage is always a cause for concern. When water damage does strike, it’s important to know how to handle the situation with efficiency and ease. Effective water damage restoration comes with knowing that the situation is urgent and calling the professionals immediately, however, there are a few things each and every homeowner can do to minimize the damage.
Prevent It
The best path towards successful water damage restoration is to not have to restore anything at all. One of the most beneficial things a homeowner can do is be informed. In short, know your home!
- Know where your water main valve switch is located. This is really important. Don’t be afraid to shut it off when you go away for long periods of time.
- During the winter, disconnect your hoses. This prevents standing water from forming and creating an issue where your water flow becomes obstructed. Bursting pipes are no fun!
- Maintain the hoses in your home. From the washing machine to under the sink, make sure you upgrade your hoses regularly to avoid leaks.
- Measure your water pressure. Hoses and pipes can only handle so much and checking the pressure that is running through them can save you a huge headache. You can buy a pressure gauge at Home Depot or Lowes that will do the trick.
Safety First
Any disaster, small or large, comes with the risk of safety. First, make sure everyone is safe and while cleaning up the damage wear gloves, waterproof footwear, and protective gear. Additionally, be mindful of mold and bacteria, exposure to them can be very unhealthy.
Create Airflow
SERVPRO’s professionals understand how important it is to create airflow in a water damage emergency and their team is second-to-none when it comes to water cleanup and restoration. As a homeowner, we recommend utilizing any fans or dehumidifiers you have in your home until the pros arrive. This helps prevent bacteria and microbial growth from forming.
Smart Storage
One of the smartest preventative measures you can take is to keep a close eye on how you store your belongings and items within your home. Items and boxes stored at floor level are a target for damage, should a water emergency occur. Utilizing plastic or metal shelves for storage can prevent your items from taking on water damage. Avoid wood and particleboard if possible.
Plastic storage bins can provide an excellent way to store items as well. And even better, they’re cheap! Make sure the tops are secure and store them a few feet off the ground.
Isolate the Damage
If disaster does strike, you will want to remove the affected items right away. Separate water-logged items and place them in an area where they can dry. This will allow you the ability to move around the water-filled area with ease and create airflow that can help reduce water damage quickly.
Call the Pros
Dealing with water restoration and damage can be incredibly time consuming and frustrating. We suggest you call the professionals immediately so they can guide you through the process. The team at SERVPRO North Central San Antonio is experienced and knowledgeable and will be able to get you back on track in no time. We are here to serve you!
Is Your Water Bill Too High?
5/12/2021 (Permalink)
Leaky Kitchen Faucet
It can be normal for your water bill to fluctuate from month to month - you may be watering your lawn more in the Spring or Summer, or doing extra laundry if you have guests visiting. As long as you know why your water bill is higher, there shouldn't be any cause for alarm. However, sometimes you may notice an unexpected large increase…and that could be a sign of water damage
To help you prevent severe water damage to your property, here are 4 common kinds of leaks to look out for that may be causing your water bill to be too high:
Leaking Faucets
A leaky faucet may just release a few drops of water, but if you wind up with a severe leak you could be wasting as much as 20 gallons of water every day. That’s why it’s important to check each faucet to make sure there are no visible signs of a leak.
One way to check is by placing an empty cup underneath the faucet and making sure no water collects. You’ll also want to take a look at the piping in the cabinets underneath the sink, and don’t forget to check your outside hoses and water sources as well!
Leaking Pipes
Plumbing leaks can sometimes be difficult to detect as many of your pipes may be hidden behind walls or above the ceiling. Still, you can at least make sure to check all the visible fittings and fixtures for any signs of damage or leaking.
As for your hidden pipes, you can pay attention to the ceiling and walls themselves. If you notice any signs of discoloration, deterioration, or mold, that can be a clue to the source of the problem.
Leaking Toilets
A continuously running toilet can waste as much as 200 gallons of water every day and cause your water bill to soar.
One easy way to check if you have a leak is to dispense a few drops of food dye into the tank of your toilet. If you see the color start to come into the bowl, that’s a sign of a potentially bad leak.
Purification Systems / Water Softeners
If you use a water softener or purification system, that could be the cause of your bill increase. These systems tend to produce more waste water than other plumbing systems.
If you water bill is suddenly high, you want to make sure that these systems are working correctly and not producing excessive water waste.
Here at SERVPRO North Central San Antonio, we are available 24/7 and can be at your home quickly to help you if you do have water damage. Our local team is made up of the best advanced technicians with the training and equipment needed to handle any size disaster.

Is Your Hot Water Heater Leaking? Here’s What to Do.
5/12/2021 (Permalink)
Water due to Water Heater Leaking
Finding out that your hot water heater is leaking is never a pleasant experience. But this minor emergency doesn’t have to become a major disaster.
Here’s a list of steps you can take to minimize the damage from a leaking heater:
Confirm that it is, in fact, your water heater that’s leaking.
Sometimes looks can be deceiving. If you see a puddle of water under your hot water heater, it’s obvious why your first thought would be a heater leak. But that may, in fact, not be the problem.
If it’s a small puddle, your first step should be to clean-up the water an inspect the heater. Do you see any wet fittings or other signs of leakage from the tank itself? Check your surroundings for other water sources? Maybe there’s a nearby window or pipe that is the actual source of the water you see. Don’t forget about the effect of gravity! If your floor slopes, the water may have traveled from a different source point to the place where it ultimately pooled.
Turn off the water.
If you do have a leaking water heater, the next recommended step is to turn off the water.
Your hot water heater should have its own shut off valve.
If your valve is broken, you may need to shut off the water to your home. If you need assistance, reach out to your local expert professionals.
Cut the power.
Whether you have a gas or electrically powered water heater, your next step is to shut off the fuel source that powers your heater.
A gas tank should have its own dedicated shut-off gas valve. You want to make sure the gas is off so your heater will be safe to work with. If you have an electric tank, you can shut off the power at the breaker.
Try to determine the location and cause of the leak.
Now that the water and power are off, you will be in a better position to assess your situation and try to determine the location and course of your leak:
Check the pipes that connect to your heater for any loose fittings. This may just require quick tightening with a wrench.
- Check your pressure relief valve. If the temperature or pressure is too high, this could be causing valve leaks. Your water heater should be around 120 degrees Fahrenheit and the pressure shouldn’t be over 80 PSI.
- Check the drain valve to make sure it doesn’t need replacing.
- Check the bottom of the water heater itself -- it may be that the tank itself is cracked and needs to be replaced.
If you determine that it is your tank that is leaking and the leak is serious, you may want to drain the tank to minimize further water damage.
Hopefully, the leak from your hot water heater hasn’t caused too much water damage. But if you need professional assistance, the restoration pros at SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio are here to help. We’re equipped to handle any size water damage restoration needed for either residential or commercial buildings.

Resolving Water Events of All Sizes Fast Is How SERVPRO Protects San Antonio Homes from Big Losses
5/4/2020 (Permalink)
Small water damage big problems
Famous last words from a homeowner struggling with expensive and disruptive water property destruction often start with a rueful statement that the cause seemed like a relatively minor problem. Mopping up a puddle inside a cabinet or putting down a towel under the refrigerator because you believe, without any real proof, that the kids spill water daily, quickly show to be inadequate short term “band-aid” solutions. We can help residential property owners in San Antonio when water loss circumstances require comprehensive and analytical assessment and permanent professional resolutions.
We Have the Flood Water Removal Techniques You Need for Results in San Antonio
5/4/2020 (Permalink)
Any size job we can help
San Antonio flood damage? SERVPRO will get the job done right.
Any number of emergencies can happen within your home. However, flooding and water damage is often something most homeowners mistakenly try to tackle on their own. This is the type of restoration project that is at the highest level in terms of emergencies, so it calls for the help of skilled technicians to get the job done right. If you find yourself faced with flooding, you need to know that there is more than water that is cause for concern.
For flood water removal in San Antonio, SERVPRO springs into action to assess the task at hand. Our trained technicians work quickly to try and salvage as much of your interior contents and structure as we can. This is done by testing any remaining water and scoping your interior to find the water migration path. We then determine what equipment must be used and start the restoration process.
Floodwater Can Be Dangerous
Unlike a burst pipe that spills a great deal of clean water into your home, floodwater is often contaminated with elements like dirt, debris, chemicals, and even sewage. SERVPRO technicians test the floodwater in your home to determine the level of potential hazard so that we know precisely how to proceed.
Controlled Demolition
There are times when flood cuts are necessary when SERVPRO is called to a floodwater loss. Whenever the floodwater comes into contact with sheetrock, it is quickly wicked up through the core and then begins traveling upward. Our team measures beyond the highest watermark, cutting several inches above it to ensure that the unsalvageable materials are removed. This then opens the cavity of the wall to allow for thorough drying.
Mitigation Safe Practices
We often advise homeowners to stay away from any flooded areas of the home. Kitchen Water Removal in San Antonio Gets Fast Action
The speed at which water damage gets cleaned up makes a big difference in the amount of loss a homeowner experiences. When a bathtub overflows, toilet backs up, or appliance malfunctions, all of these situations require expedited extraction and drying.
Kitchens are one of the most common areas of water removal needs in San Antonio residences. The floors often bear the brunt of the loss as tile flooring is typical, and water seeps quickly between the tiles and causes moisture buildup in the subfloor.
Common Issues of Longterm Water Loss
Two of the most frequently seen reasons for significant damage from water narrows into two categories. The first is inadequate initial cleanup efforts, and the second is too much time between the event and the restoration process. Before they even get out their moisture detection equipment, SERVPRO technicians know to look for:
- Delamination of tile
- Foul odors
- Signs of Mold Infestation
- Softened or buckled sheetrock
- Warped floorboards
- Water spots on walls and ceilings
Equipment for Thorough Extraction
The way the water removal process gets handled has a bearing on the rest of the restoration services. The more moisture that gets picked up lessens the time needed to dry the structure. The less water that remains within the floor and subfloor increases the potential of saving the homeowner the cost of replacement. The techs commonly do several dry passes to ensure the maximum amount of moisture gets removed before moving on to the drying phase. SERVPRO techs have access to a vast array of specialized extraction equipment such as:
- Portable pumps
- Submersible pumps for water more than 2-inches in depth
- Truck-mounted units for debris-filled and large amounts of water
- Ride-on units for use on carpets and area rugs
- Weighted extractor heads to push water out of carpet and padding
- Squeegees to push water along tile flooring
- Wands to extend the reach within wall cavities and small spaces
SERVPRO of San Antonio at (210) 899-1017 has the advanced equipment for water removal of any scale in local properties. The experienced techs are available 24/7 to restore properties to their preloss condition "Like it never even happened."

Effects of Water Damage
Water damage is a problem that most property owners dread. When it rains heavily or snow melts quickly, the risk of this type of damage increases. Water can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage by damaging wood furniture, upholstery, electronics, household appliances, and plumbing equipment. Water damage also increases the risk of mold growth, which is a very expensive problem to remediate. Hiring a water damage restoration company can make the cleanup process easier to handle, as these companies employ experienced workers who know the best ways to repair or replace damaged items and help with water damage cleanup.
Causes of Water Damage
There are several possible causes of water damage. Leaky dishwashers, clogged toilets, broken pipes, broken dishwasher hoses, overflowing washing machines, leaky roofs, plumbing leaks, and foundation cracks are just some of the possible causes of water damage in homes and businesses. Floods, heavy snow, and heavy rain are other possible causes of this type of damage.
Once a home or business sustains water damage, it is important to start the water damage cleanup immediately. Starting water damage cleanup as soon as possible increases the likelihood of saving water-soaked furniture, carpets, rugs, clothing, and other items."

3 Facts About Water Damage
3/4/2019 (Permalink)
Water Damage Clean-Up
Dealing with water damage is every homeowner's nightmare. Questions about what to do, what will be covered by insurance and what possessions to save first will start ‘flooding’ in. When a pipe bursts or a
basement floods, life is on hold until your home is dried and secured – and that’s not always an easy task.
Here are three facts about water damage that will help you secure your home and respond properly to a potential disaster:
1. The Type of Water is Important
Generally speaking, there are three types of water that invade homes: rainwater, fresh water, and sewage. Depending on the type of water in your home, you may need to approach cleanup efforts differently. Sewage can contain harmful bacteria. Fortunately, telling the difference is often easy, as it will typically smell just as terrible as you would expect. If you think that you are dealing with sewage, a professional water damage cleanup company will have the proper tools and equipment needed to handle the problem safely.
2. The Trouble Doesn’t End When the Water is Gone
It may be tempting to let out a sigh of relief the moment the water is removed from your home, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t moisture still lurking in the shadows. When moisture is hidden in walls, crawlspaces and below floorboards, it can eventually lead to mold. Mold is toxic and causes damage to structural elements of a home, leading to serious consequences. Make sure you have a mold prevention expert inspect your property to ensure this dangerous substance isn’t invading your home.
3. Attics Are a Cause for Concern
The most common source of water damage is a leaky roof or malfunctioning gutters, which means your attic is at the highest risk for water damage. Make sure to have your attic inspected regularly by water damage professional to make sure that a small leak isn’t turning into a serious problem.

Kitchen Leaks - Have a plan !
7/30/2018 (Permalink)
Kitchen leak cause by Refrigerator
Every minute counts when you're faced with a flood or water leak in the kitchen, so having a plan is critical.
In a worst-case scenario, homeowners will need to shut off the main water supply line to the home before addressing the broken appliance or busted pipe directly.
There are two types of valves: the main valve, which stops water flow to the entire home; and supply valves that connect to specific appliances. Look for the main water valve and turn it off clockwise to stop the flow. (Note: if the valve is a lever, turn the handle perpendicular to the water line.)
Some homes have a supply valve located near the water line of the appliance. If this is easier to get to at first, turn it off; however, the main line should still be turned off.
Once the water valve has been shut off, call SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio. We are faster to any disaster. Our highly trained technicians will arrive onsite and make it look "Like it never even happened."

Types of Water Damage
3/16/2018 (Permalink)
When you have a water intrusion in your home or business there are many factors at play which will affect what needs to be done in order to make it "Like it never even happened." One of the first determinations we make on the site of a residential or commercial water damage is the waters level of contamination. The level of contamination, along with the specific circumstances of the job, will dictate what actions need to be taken during the remediation process. Essentially the cleaner the water, the more we can save instead of throwing away and replacing building materials; which means a cheaper, less invasive, and shorter job altogether.
In the restoration industry the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (or IICRC) is the organization which sets the restoration industries standards and practices. It is the IICRC’s standards that we follow to ensure every water mitigation and remediation job we tackle is done correctly. When it comes to the sanitary level of water there are three levels:
- Category 1: Clean and Sanitary. Typically comes from a sanitary source such as faucet, toilet tanks, drinking fountains, or water heaters.
- Category 2: Grey Water which can cause illness or discomfort if ingested. Typical sources are dish washers, washing machine overflows, flush from sink drains, or toilet overflows with urine (no feces)
- Category 3: Black Water is grossly unsanitary which could cause severe illness or death if ingested. This includes sewer backups, flooding from rivers or streams, toilet overflow with feces, and stagnant liquid which has supported microbial growth.
These categories are also time dependent so a flood caused by a drinking fountain (Category 1 clean water) will become contaminated category 2 water after 48 hours. Another 24 hours after that it becomes a category 3 loss. This change in category means a tremendous difference in the scope of work, cost of remediation, and time of job.
Example; a clean water pipe broke in your basement while you were at work and now you have wet carpets and wet drywall. At the moment it is a category 1 loss and as long as the carpet pad does not have a vapor barrier we do not even need to pull the carpet back, the carpet, carpet pad and drywall can all be dried in place with minimal disturbance to his day to day.
If you wait 48 hours to give us a call now the water is a category 2 loss meaning we have to pull back all the affected carpet, remove and dispose of the affected carpet pad and apply an antimicrobial to the carpet and subfloor. As far as the walls and other materials go they may need to be cut out and removed based on the unique circumstances of the loss or how saturated the materials have become.
If you were to wait another 24 hours to give us a call now we are dealing with a category 3 loss so both the affected carpet pad and the carpet must be cut out and removed. The affected walls will most likely be severely saturated and contaminated and will most likely need to be removed. All furniture and items left in that water will need to be cleaned and sanitized with the possibility that many items will not be able to be saved.
Waiting to take care of water damage is a bad idea that can cost you money, time and cause a lot of hassle. That is why we SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio is available 24 hours a day 7 day a week so that as soon as disaster strikes we can be there for you.

Water extraction is typically followed by structural drying and/or drying contents and any other materials that were affected by the water. This process normally takes between 2-5 days.
Time is of the essence!

Frozen Pipes = Water Damage
2/12/2018 (Permalink)
Below Average Temps can cause pipes to freeze & burst.
Ice storms bring devastation to southern states that are not prepared for freezing weather. San Antonio is not prone to this type of weather so having snow or ice removal equipment to clear streets and bridges is very limited. The public is unfamiliar with the driving hazards poses by icy streets. Property damage from freezing can be extreme. Pipe insulation and the placement of pipes is not prepared to ward off deep freezing.
If your pipes do freeze
What if your pipes still freeze, despite your best preventive measures? First step: Don't panic. Just because they're frozen doesn't mean they've already burst. Here's what you can do:
- If you turn on your faucets and nothing comes out, leave the faucets turned on and call a plumber.
- Do not use electrical appliances in areas of standing water. You could be electrocuted.
- Never try to thaw a pipe with a torch or other open flame because it could cause a fire hazard. Water damage is preferable to burning down your house!
- You may be able to thaw a frozen pipe using a hair dryer. Start by warming the pipe as close to the faucet as possible, working toward the coldest section of pipe.
- If your water pipes have already burst, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve in the house; leave the water faucets turned on. Make sure everyone in your family knows where the water shutoff valve is and how to open and close it.

Causes and Effects of Water Damage in San Antonio
7/31/2017 (Permalink)
Water damage happens when unwanted water gets to the parts of your building that are supposed to remain dry. Natural disasters such as hurricanes, heavy rainfall and overflowing bodies of water are the most common culprits. In a lot of other cases, water intrusion can come from man-made water sources. Plumbing failures, sewage leaks, water heater bursts and toilet overflows are common incidents that can result in indoor flooding.
While water doesn't seem quite as threatening as fire, it can be every bit as destructive. Water can weaken wood, corrode metals, ruin appliances and destroy valuable documents. It can also render carpets, draperies and upholstery unusable after prolonged exposure. Worst of all, intruding water can short-circuit a building’s electrical infrastructure and create fire or electrocution hazards. It can even spur the growth of disease-causing bacteria and fungi indoors.
To mitigate property loss and to bring back safety in your home or workplace, SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio follows a stringent water damage restoration process. When you call us in, we’ll send a team of experts to your site. We will then follow these steps in route to a fully-restored building in as little time as possible:
- Damage Mapping – Using state-of-the-art water and moisture detection equipment, we’ll track down every trace of unwanted water within your property. This allows us to take away all of it and prevent it from doing incremental damage right under your nose.
- Water Source Shutdown – If you aren’t aware of where the water is coming from, we’ll find the source for you. We will then shut it down to prevent the floodwater from massing up and doing even more damage.
- Water Extraction – When the flooded area stabilizes, we’ll bring in powerful water pumps that suck out the unwanted water from every affected section of your building.
- Dehumidification – It’s not enough to get rid of water in its liquid form. Water that has evaporated and turned into moisture can leave a musty odor and sustain life for microbes. We use industrial dehumidifiers to flush out excess water vapor and normalize indoor air conditions.
- Disinfection– After all the water and excess moisture has been dealt with, it’s time to kill the germs that have grown and thrived when water entered your building. We use disinfecting agents that are gentle on your property and the people in it, but ultra-tough on microbes that can make people sick.
- Content Inventory – We’ll account for every piece of content in your home or workplace’s flooded areas and assess repaired vs replacement.
- Reconstruction – We’ll inspect your infrastructure for damage and assess what needs repair, what needs to be replaced and what needs to be rebuilt. We’ll give you the best recommendations; and, if you give us the go signal, we’ll get down to business in getting your place back to its former glory.
- Final Assessment – Before we wrap up, we’ll go through all the work we did based on the quote that we agreed upon. We want to make sure that you’re completely satisfied with what we’ve done and we’ll be glad to make adjustments, if needed, to your satisfaction.

Toilet Overflow or Sewage Backup Emergency in San Antonio Texas
